Winsock, wsock32
Some problems that indicate a possible winsock issue or conflict include receiving error messages such as "Cannot Open Internet Site Https://web
address", "Unable to create a network socket", "Unable to negotiate a compatible set of network protocls", "Cannot find the server; no DNS entry" and others.
How to find winsock/wsock32
- Method I
Go to Start | Find | Files or Folders (Windows 98/ME). Go to Start | Search
(Windows XP). Look in = C:\ for winsock.*; wsock32.* . If you have a problem locating these files, be sure system files can be viewed.
- Method II:
Use dir DOS command. Go to a Command Prompt and type
"cd\" to change to root directory on the c: drive. Type "dir /s winsock.dll":

Removing Winsock 2
Check the Winsock.dll, Wsock32.dll, and Wsock.vxd Files (and
Winsock2)
The Winsock 2.0 update for Microsoft Windows 95 includes
the Ws2bakup.bat file for removing Winsock 2.0. To find the Ws2bakup.bat
file on the hard disk, use the following steps.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type "ws2bakup.bat" (without the quotes), and then click
Find Now. NOTE: Be sure to search in the drive where Windows is installed
(usually drive C).
- Restart the computer and bring up the Windows 95 Startup menu by holding
down the F8 key when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message (white type on a
black screen). Click Command Prompt Only, and then type the following commands
pressing ENTER after each command:
cd windows
cd ws2bakup
ws2bakup.bat
- After the Ws2bakup.bat file is finished running, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to
restart the computer.
- Export and delete the WinSock2 key located in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2
- Uninstall Dial-Up Networking

Description and location of wsock32n.dll
The Wsock32n.dll file is installed by Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is not included in the retail version of Windows 95. This file is found on cab 40 in Windows 98 and on the IE 4 (sp2) directory listing. It appears to be .dll used by Internet Explorer and is found in the Windows\System directory. It is one of the files that must be replaced (Extracted) when there is a problem opening the Dialup Networking Folder.
