What is a Proxy Server?
A proxy server is a server that sits between a client application (like your web browser or email client) and a real server (like the web page you are trying to access). It intercepts all requests to the real server to see if it can fulfill the requests itself. If not, it forwards the request to the real server. One of the most common uses of a proxy server is to filter requests - Many companies use proxy servers to keep their employees from viewing web pages that do not relate to their jobs.
A Cute Internet does not use proxy servers. You're web browser and email clients should not be set to use proxy servers, doing so can cause problems surfing the web and checking email.
To check for proxy server settings:
Windows Internet Explorer 5 and 6
- Open your Control Panel, and double-click the Internet Options icon.
- Click onto the Connections tab.
- If you have a dialup account, highlight your dial-up connection then click the Settings button next to it.
- The options on this screen should not be check marked; remove any check marks that may be there. Click OK.
- DSL, cable and dialup users: click onto the LAN Settings button.
- There should be no options check marked on this screen either; remove any check marks that may be there.
- Click OK, then OK again.
Windows Internet Explorer 4
- Open your Control Panel, and double-click the Internet icon.
- Click onto the Connection tab.
- Check that the Connect using a proxy server option is not checked.
- Click OK.
Macintosh Internet Explorer 4.5 and 5
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Click the Edit menu, then choose Preferences.
- Under the Network category on the left hand side, choose Proxies.
- For IE 4.5, make sure that the Disabled Option is marked.
For IE 5, uncheck all options on this screen.
- Click OK.
Windows and Macintosh Netscape 4.x, 6 and 7
- With Netscape open, click the Edit menu, then choose Preferences.
- Expand the Advanced category by clicking on the plus sign to the left.
- Click the Proxies category.
- Make sure that the option is set to Direct Connection to the Internet.
- Click OK.
